Nuclear Lesson Plans
Intermediate(7-9)
Atoms
Following the lessons on atomic theory and matter each middle school student will relate all matter to having atoms and will be able to explain the basic structure of atoms with their electrons, protons, and neutrons, the differing numbers of each in different elements, and their arrangement in an atomic structure, this will be demonstrated by a minimum score of 75% on all assigned work.
Atom Quiz
A smal quiz related to the atoms lesson plan
Atoms Lecture Handout
Lecture Handout for Atoms Lesson plan
Nuclear Power
Following the lessons on nuclear fission and the production of electricity using uranium the middle level students will understand the basics of how uranium is used to produce electric energy, concepts of nuclear fission, nuclear power plants, steam generation, turbines and generators, and heat transfer will be covered and they will demonstrate their knowledge by completing the drawing to 100%.
Nuclear Power Quiz
Quiz is linked to the Nuclear Power Lesson Plan
Radiation
The middle level students will be able to identify types of radiation by their characteristics and understand the shielding requirements to be protected from each type. They will demonstrate this by completion of the assigned material to 85%.

Use all other quiz questions as possible questions

Secondary(9-14)
Cloud Chamber
Students will make simple cloud chambers, and be able to independently track the decay of radioactive elements. Students will understand the differences between the three basic decay paths, and their products.
Polonium ½ Life Lab
Students will be able to create and interpret half-life graphs, and will understand how to use the graph to find mass or radioactivity by correlating with time. Students will understand the concept of half lives. Students will understand that elements decay into other elements while releasing Alpha and Beta particles.
Nuclear Reaction Demo
Students will understand the concept of a controlled nuclear decay, and how this decay is controlled.
Nuclear Reaction Demo (foldable)
Students will understand the concept of a controlled nuclear decay, and how this decay is controlled.
Nuclear Review game (Quick Draw)
This is a good review of the principles of nuclear power, and nuclear concepts. It can easily be altered to fit individual needs.

Safe, Reliable Nuclear Energy
The overall goal of this presentation is to introduce to the student the role of Nuclear Energy in the entire energy production landscape: Generation, use, environmental impacts, political considerations, etc.
Half-Life
Understanding radioactive decay by using statistical methods to gather and compare data.
Nuclear Popcorn
Help students visualize the rate of radioactive decay.
